Indian farmers wrestle to fulfill the demand for avocados

Fifteen years in the past there was virtually no marketplace for avocados in India, remembers Sunil Bopaiah.

Ripe fruit would fall off bushes and be eaten by canines, incomes avocados the unappetising identify canine fruit, he says.

Bopaiah has been working in India’s plantation trade for 26 years, he is presently group supervisor at Cottanad Plantations, which grows cocoa, rubber, espresso, spices and fruits, together with avocado, within the hills of Wayanad within the southern Indian state of Kerala.

“We by no means planted avocado as our most important crop. We launched it as a shade tree for espresso plantations, and solely later realised it might turn out to be a worthwhile enterprise,” he says.

He says the turning level was round 2011 when Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty stated she used avocado for skincare.

“Overnight, costs doubled after which saved rising,” he says.

Cottanad has responded to that demand by planting avocado bushes on 40 acres. Last 12 months they harvested between 10 and 15 tonnes of fruit. In three of 4 years time they hope to lift that to 40 to 50 tonnes.

There’s been rather a lot to be taught.

“We utterly modified the best way we develop avocados after studying from South African specialists. Today we use raised beds, wider spacing and totally different planting strategies as a result of avocado roots are extremely susceptible to illnesses,” Bopaiah says.

There’s loads of scope for Indian farmers to step-up manufacturing.

“When we studied the market, we discovered an enormous hole between demand and provide. India imports round 15,000 tonnes of avocados yearly, whereas home manufacturing is simply about 8,000–9,000 tonnes,” says Manilal Palliyath who helps promote India’s avocado trade.

He sees a giant alternative for farmers, significantly as conventional crops have suffered.

“Coffee and pepper have suffered due to altering weather conditions, making diversification important for farmers.”
